Whitbeck sets national record; Grove City finishes 3rd
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) set a new national record in the 200 butterfly Saturday, helping the Grove City College women's swim team finish third at the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships and Grove City College Invitational.
Westminster won the championship with 774 points while Washington and Jefferson took second with 720.
Whitbeck completed the race in 2:01.84, breaking her record of 2:02.99, which she set earlier in the day during preliminaries. She earned the conference's outstanding performer honors and shared the high-point award with Westminster's Stefanie King.
Whitbeck also swam the anchor leg of Grove City's victorious 400 free relay team. Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled), Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and Whitbeck set a new PAC record with a time of 3:40.11.
Bare opened Saturday night's finals with a PAC record time of 18:10.96 in the 1650 freestyle. Shaddak finished third while BrieAnn Artz (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) placed fifth in the 1650.
Meanwhile, Jacquie Adlam (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took runner-up in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:33.42. Amanda Brozenic (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) claimed fifth in the 200 breaststroke, two spots ahead of senior teammate Amanda Schade (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny).
Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Hawken Upper) took fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:15.68) while Annie Lindsay (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) finished seventh in the 200 butterfly and eighth in the 200 backstroke.
