Grove City women take 3rd at Allegheny Distance invite

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving squad placed third at the Allegheny Distance Invitational Saturday at Mellon Pool with 341 team points.

Geneseo State (N.Y.) won the Distance Invitational with 612 points while Wooster took second with 564. Allegheny was fourth at 219.

Senior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) helped lead Grove City with a pair of victories and a runner-up finish. Whitbeck won the 400 individual medley in 4:42.13, surpassing the NCAA Division III "B" qualifying standard. She also won the 200 butterfly in 2:10.57 and took second in the 500 free in 5:12.52.

Junior Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) took third in the 1650 in 18:46.78 and sixth in the 500 (5:36.81) while sophomore Amanda Brozenic (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:41.81.

In addition, the 800 free relay squad of Bare, Whitbeck, Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) and Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) took second in 8:16.08. 

Freshman diver Alexis Zanias (Coplay, Pa./Lehigh Valley Christian) earned runner-up honors in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
