Grove City women 2nd after 1st day of Longnecker Invite

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team is in second place after the first night of the seventh annual two-day James E. Longnecker Invitational at Grove City College Pool.

Grove City has 177 team points, trailing just Division II Gannon (205).

Senior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) surpassed the NCAA Division III "B" qualifying standard in winning the 500 freestyle in 5:09.85. Sophomore Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) took third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.24 while junior Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) placed fifth in the 500 free in 5:29.16.

Freshman Alexis Zanias (Coplay, Pa./Lehigh Valley Christian) took third in the 3-meter diving with 171.90 points.

Grove City's 200 free relay quartet of Whitbeck, Karen Rodgers (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Gates Mills) took fourth in 1:43.23. Grove City then closed first-night action by taking third in the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:14.22. The 400 medley relay consisted of Pullin, Whitbeck, Magee and Amanda Brozenic (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock). 

Second-day action begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.
