Grove City women top D-III team at Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team finished third at the 10-team James E. Longnecker Invitational Saturday at the Grove City College Pool. Grove City closed the two-day event with 603 team points, trailing only NCAA Division II schools West Virginia Wesleyan (681.5) and Gannon (621). 

Senior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) swept both the 100 (57.87 seconds) and 200 butterfly (2:04.27) races, surpassing the NCAA Division III "A" qualifying standard in both. 

Whitbeck joined Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego), Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) on Grove City's victorious 800 free relay team. Grove City set a new Invitational record with a time of 8:00.66. 

Magee took second in the 100 free (54.92) while Shaddak finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.07). Magee also took sixth in the 100 butterfly. Bare earned runner-up honors in the 1650 (18:26.19) and took third in the 200 free (2:01.25).

Also for Grove City, Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Gates Mills) finished fourth in the 100 backstroke. Annie Lindsay (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) earned sixth in the 200 backstroke while Karen Rodgers (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) finished sixth in the 200 free. 

Magee, Bare, Rodgers and Whitbeck combined for a third-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:45.10 while the quartet of Bare, Rodgers, Magee and Shaddak placed sixth in the 200 medley relay.
