Grove City wraps up winning season

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Led by three individual double-winners, the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team raised its record to 5-2 with a 124-112 triumph over Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon at Grove City College Pool.

The victory assures Grove City of its second consecutive winning season.

Senior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) won both the 200 butterfly (2:07.23) and 200 free (1:59.91) while junior distance ace Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) swept the 500 (5:27.35) and 1000 (11:12.36).

Sophomore Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) took top honors in the 100 free (55.99) and 200 individual medley (2:18.62).

Junior Karen Rodgers (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) won the 50 free in 25.93 seconds while freshman diver Emily Hays (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) won the 3-meter diving competition.

Grove City clinched the victory by winning the 400 freestyle relay as Magee, Bare, Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and Whitbeck combined for a time of 3:47.17.

Grove City will look for its first six-win season since 1999 Wednesday when the Wolverines host Penn State Behrend.
