Grove City leads after 1st night of PAC Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team is in first place after one day of competition at the 2004 Grove City College Invitational and Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships at Grove City College Pool.

Grove City earned 222 team points Thursday night and owns a one-point lead over second-place Westminster. Washington and Jefferson is third with 211 points.

Senior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) picked up Grove City's lone win Thursday night, capturing the 500 free in 5:09.30. Numerous other Grove City swimmers turned in outstanding performances, however.

Senior Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) took third in the 50 free in 25.26 seconds, two places ahead of junior teammate Karen Rodgers (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills). Junior Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) placed fourth in the 500 free (5:17.23) while freshman Ellen Magee (Cincinnati, Ohio/Homeschooled) took sixth in the 200 individual medley.

Freshman diver Alexis Zanias (Coplay, Pa./Lehigh Valley Christian) took second in 1-meter diving while freshman Emily Hays (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) placed third in the 1-meter competition.

Grove City's 400 medley relay team of Whitbeck, Magee, Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, Ohio/Hawken Upper) and junior Jacquie Adlam (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) closed Thursday night's action with a second-place finish. The quartet turned in a time of 4:05.53.

Preliminary action begins at 10 a.m. Friday. The finals will start at 6 p.m.
