GCC crowns pair of champs in second day of action

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior Christine Bare (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and senior Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) each set Presidents' Athletic Conference and Grove City College Invitational records Friday night in second-day action at the Grove City College Invitational and PAC Championships.

Westminster leads with 546 points while Washington and Jefferson is second at 508. Grove City has 488 team points.

Bare won the 1000 free in a time of 10:42.44, setting the new meet records. Whitbeck, a three-time All-American in the 100 butterfly, won the 100 fly in 57.80 seconds. Whitbeck surpassed the NCAA "A" qualifying standard for the 100 butterfly with her victory Friday night.

Bare and Whitbeck joined senior Carolyn Shaddak (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and junior Karen Rodgers (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) on Grove City's runner-up 800 free relay team. The quartet posted a time of 7:55.31, which broke the previous pool record.
