Grove City tops Chatham in dual-meet opener

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team opened the dual-meet portion of the 2006-07 season Saturday afternoon with a 121-114 victory over visiting Chatham in the Grove City College Pool. Grove City is now 1-0.

Freshman Jane Wilson (Newberg, Ore./Veritas School) earned a pair of individual wins for the Wolverines. Wilson won the 50 free in 24.93 seconds, then won the 100 free in 55.91. Sophomore Whitney Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.80 while freshman Rachel Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain) won the 100 backstroke (1:05.53).

Also for Grove City, junior Ellen Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) won the 200 butterfly in 2:40.65 while sophomore Alyse Brannon (Purcellville, Va./Homeschooled) won the 200 backstroke in 2:25.69. Freshman Ruth Wiedeman (Westminster, Md./Cedar Brook) won the 1000 in 12:23.80.

Brannon, Baur, sophomore Kiersten Bower (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) and freshman Andra Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 2:00.91.

Grove City will visit Carnegie Mellon next Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
