Wolverines earn 2nd at Clarion
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team opened the 2007-08 season Friday and Saturday by earning second place at the two-day, seven-team Clarion University Fall Classic. The Wolverines earned 513.5 team points, trailing only Clarion (688 points). Lock Haven (223), Westminster (161), Slippery Rock (153.5), Lycoming (83) and Frostburg State (52) rounded out the field.
Junior Kiersten Bower (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) led Grove City's effort by winning the 200 butterfly in 2 minutes, 26.43 seconds.
Freshman Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled) posted a pair of runner-up finishes for Grove City. Bargery took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.75) and 200 breaststroke (2:32.53). She also finished third in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:05.57.
Freshman Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) took second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:32.76 while junior Rebecca Smiddy (Miami, Fla.) earned runner-up in the 1650 with a time of 19:34.58.
Sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:21.89. Senior Ellen Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) placed third in the 200 butterfly (2:41.79).
Three Grove City relay teams earned runner-up honors. Bargery, Baur, Keefer and freshman Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) teamed to finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:45.43. That quartet also posted a runner-up time of 3:49.76 in the 400 free relay. Bargery, Baur, Page and Thompson finished second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:13.53 and third in the 200 medley relay (1:58.23).
Grove City will visit Chatham Saturday, November 3 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meet.
