Grove City takes 2nd at Longnecker Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team placed second at the Wolverines' own 11th annual James E. Longnecker Invitational Saturday night at the Grove City College Pool. Grove City recorded 718 team points over the two-day event. Washington & Jefferson won the team crown with 1,033 points.

Freshman Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled) swept the breaststroke events Saturday while senior Ellen Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) won the 200 free. Bargery won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 9.69 seconds. She then took the 200 breaststroke in 2:30.88. Keefer, meanwhile, posted a time of 1:58.96 in winning the 200 free.

Keefer also anchored Grove City's victorious 400 and 800 free relay teams. Keefer, freshman Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn), freshman Tiffani Douglas (Sayre, Pa./Homeschooled) and freshman Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) capped the Saturday morning session by winning the 800 free relay in 8:15.80.

Keefer, Page, Bargery and Baur then won the 400 free relay Saturday night in 3:40.12.

Page placed second in the 100 (54.69) and 200 free (2:00.06) while sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) earned runner-up in the 200 backstroke (2:16.91). Thompson, Bargery, Keefer and junior Kiersten Bower (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) finished second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:57.49.

Baur finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:03.13) while Thompson took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.01. Keefer finished third in the 100 freestyle (55.01) while freshman Katie Brunk (Wyncote, Pa./Cheltenham) placed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:40.66). Junior Rebecca Smiddy (Miami, Fla./Homeschooled) took third in the 1650 (19:18.24). Freshman Stephanie McNeill (Louisville, Ky./Brazoswood, Texas) placed third in 1-meter diving with 221.75 points.

Grove City will return to action Wednesday night against Bethany at 6 p.m.
