Grove City tops Bethany in PAC opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team improved to 4-4 overall with a 151-95 win over visiting Bethany Wednesday night in Grove City's Presidents' Athletic Conference dual-meet opener at the Grove City College Pool.
Five different Grove City swimmers posted a pair of individual victories Wednesday. Sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) won the 200 free in 2 minutes, 7.31 seconds, then won the 200 backstroke in 2:21.51. Junior Rebecca Smiddy (Miami, Fla./Homeschooled) won the 500 in 5:38.48 before picking up a win in the 200 individual medley (2:26.31).
Freshman Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) won the 1000 (11:45.60) before picking up a victory in the 50 free (26.22). Freshman Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) touched first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.90. She then won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.46.
Freshman Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled) earned a win in the 100 free (57.74), then captured the 200 breaststroke with a 2:34.28 clocking.
Also for Grove City, junior Kiersten Bower (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) won the 200 butterfly in 2:24.16 while freshman Katie Brunk (Wyncote, Pa./Cheltenham) notched a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.25).
Thompson, Bargery, Baur and Page opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:59.51. Page, Brunk, junior Liza McRuer (Irvine, Calif./University) and senior Ellen Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) capped the win by taking first in the 400 free relay (3:59.95).
Freshman Stephanie McNeill (Louisville, Ohio/Brazoswood, Texas) won 3-meter diving with 174.50 points.
Grove City will conclude the 2007 portion of the schedule Saturday in a non-conference dual at Hiram, starting at 1 p.m.
