Wolverines 2nd after first night
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sparked by a sweep of both relay events Thursday night, the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team is currently in second place after the first night of the 18th annual Grove City Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. Grove City accumulated 196 team points and trails only Washington & Jefferson in the team standings. W&J has 256 points.
Grove City opened Thursday night's finals by winning the 200 free relay as senior Ellen Keefer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville), freshman Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled), freshman Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and freshman Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) captured first in 1 minute, 37.51 seconds.
That quartet set a new Grove City College Pool and meet record in the 200 free relay during the preliminaries with a time of 1:37.37. That time eclipses the NCAA Championships provisional, or "B" qualifying standard.
Bargery, Baur, Page and sophomore Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) closed Thursday's session by winning the 400 medley relay in 3:58.90. That time also betters the NCAA provisional mark. Thompson led off in the backstroke with a 100-yard time of 59.32, which is lower than the "B" standard in the 100 backstroke.
Page also earned a victory in the 50 freestyle with a "B" qualifying time of 24.38. Keefer took second in the 50 with a time of 24.55. In the preliminaries, Keefer posted a time of 24.40, which is lower than the "B" standard of 24.46 seconds. Baur completed Grove City's 1-2-3 sweep in the 50 by taking third in 24.88.
Bargery finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:15.17). Freshman Stephanie McNeill (Louisville, Ky./Brazoswood, Texas) placed fourth in 1-meter diving with 300.90 points.
Action in the three-day competition resumes Friday morning at 10 a.m. with preliminaries. The finals will start at 6 p.m.
