Wolverines capture title at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving opened the 2008-09 season Friday and Saturday by winning the Clarion Fall Classic. Grove City earned 833.5 team points over the two-day competition en route to the team title. Clarion finished second with 586.5 points, followed by Westminster (174), Lock Haven (143), Slippery Rock (99) and Frostburg State (76).

Freshman Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) paced Grove City by winning the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Richert recorded a time of 2 minutes, 19.76 seconds in winning the 200 fly while also producing a victorious time of 5:22.74 in the 500.

Freshman Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.19 while sophomore Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) won the 200 free in 2:03.17.

Wilt also recorded runner-up finishes in the 200 free (2:03.33) and 500 (5:25.35). Page placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.75. Sophomore Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled) took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.80) while senior Rebecca Smiddy (Miami, Fla./Homeschooled) earned runner-up in the 1650 with a time of 19:14.39. Junior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) earned second in the 400 IM (5:00.51).

Grove City begins the dual-meet portion of the 2008-09 schedule next Saturday at Carnegie Mellon.
