Wolverines top Carnegie Mellon
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 Saturday afternoon by pulling out a 158-138 non-conference victory over visiting Carnegie Mellon in the James E. Longnecker Pool.
Sophomore Bethany Johnson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Calvary Christian), freshman Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and freshman Kaitlin Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) all recorded two victories each for the Wolverines Saturday. Johnson won 1-meter diving with 176.35 points. She then completed her sweep of the diving events by winning on the 3-meter board with 196.30 points.
Palumbo earned two wins in the sprints for Grove City. She won the 50 free in 24.91 seconds, then took the 100 free in 54.07. Riesmeyer, meanwhile, won both the 200 butterfly (2:13.84) and 500 free (5:18.88).
Freshman Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) touched first in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.94 while sophomore Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.65).
Grove City also swept both relays Saturday. Sophomore Chelsea Johnson (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), junior Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled), Riesmeyer and Ryan opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:52.97.
Wilt, Palumbo, freshman Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and junior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) sewed up the win by winning the 200 free relay (1:40.93).
Grove City will visit Saint Vincent Friday at 6 p.m. The Wolverines will then compete in the Kenyon Quad Meet next Saturday at 12 p.m.
