Grove City hands Wooster 1st loss
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team knocked visiting Wooster from the ranks of the undefeated Saturday afternoon as the host Wolverines earned a 159-136 win over Wooster (10-1) in a non-conference dual meet at the James Longnecker Competition Pool.
Four Grove City entrants earned two wins each Saturday. Sophomore diver Bethany Johnson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Calvary Christian) swept the diving competition Saturday. She won the 1-meter competition with 230.50 points and then prevailed on the 3-meter board with 225.70 points.
Freshman sprinter Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won the 50 free in 25.02 seconds, then won the 100 free in 53.76. Freshman Kaitlin Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) prevailed in the 200 free (1:58.24) and also captured the 100 butterfly (59.40).
Classmate Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) earned first in the 100 (1:02.21) and 200 (2:14.89) backstroke races for the Wolverines. Ryan also recorded a top time of 4:42.15 in the 400 individual medley on an exhibition basis.
Sophomore Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) won the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.99.
Riesmeyer, Ryan, senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and junior Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled) opened Saturday's meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:52.26. Palumbo, freshman Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and junior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) closed the meet with an exhibition time of 1:39.59 in the 200 free relay.
Grove City (12-1) has tied the program's single-season win record, set in 2008-09. The Wolverines will go for their 13th win of the season Thursday night at Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
