Grove City 3rd after opening night

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team is in third place after the opening night of the 20th Annual Grove City College Invitational/47th Annual Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships in the James E. Longnecker Invitational.

Grove City accumulated 186 points during the first night of competition. Washington & Jefferson is in first with 218.5 points while Westminster is second with 200 points.

Freshman Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) recorded Grove City's lone win Thursday night as she won the 50 freestyle in 24.42 seconds. In the preliminaries, Palumbo provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 24.38 seconds.

Freshman Kaitlin Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) placed second in the 500 free with an provisional qualifying time of 5:07.57. Riesmeyer finished one spot ahead of sophomore Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) in the 500 as Richert recorded a time of 5:10.18.

Freshman Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) captured third in the 200 individual medley with an NCAA "B" time of 2:09.76 while junior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) earned third in the 50 free (24.71).

Sophomore Bethany Johnson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Calvary Christian) took third in 1-meter diving with 366.05 points. Classmate Rachel Weeber (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) finished fifth on the 1-meter board with 312.45 points.

Freshman Mary McLachlan (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) placed fifth in the 500 (5:21.60) and junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) took fifth in the 50 (24.97).

Grove City's 400 medley relay quartet of Ryan, Riesmeyer, Palumbo and sophomore Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 3:57.94 in a time trial. That time sets a new school record.

Friday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. The finals start at 6 p.m.
