Wolverines surge into first place

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team charged into first place at the 20th Annual Grove City College Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Friday night in the James E. Longnecker Competition Center. Grove City surged past Westminster and Washington & Jefferson to take the lead with 532 team points. Westminster is second with 470.5 points and W&J is third with 436.5 points.

Two relay victories Friday night helped propel the Wolverines into first place overall. Freshman Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), junior Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled), freshman Kaitlin Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and freshman Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) opened the session by winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 48.99 seconds. That time provisionally qualifies the foursome for the NCAA Championships.

Ryan, Palumbo, Riesmeyer and sophomore Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) capped Friday night's session by winning the 800 free relay in a Grove City-record time of 7:43.53. That time also surpasses the NCAA "B" qualifying standard.

Riesmeyer and Ryan also earned individual victories for Grove City. Riesmeyer won the 100 butterfly in 58.12 seconds. In the preliminaries Friday morning, Riesmeyer posted an NCAA "B" time of 57.73 seconds. Meanwhile, Ryan won the 400 individual medley in a provisionally qualifying time of 4:38.67.

Richert provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 200 free with a runner-up time of 1:54.74 while freshman Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.51).

Senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) posted a pair of third-place finishes Friday night. She took third in both the 400 IM (4:50.26) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.61). Palumbo captured fourth in the 200 free (1:56.56) while Bargery claimed fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.47).

Freshman Michelle Shimrock (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) earned fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:56.17.

Riesmeyer recorded a "B" qualifying time of 1:55.46 in the 200 free during a time trial. Ryan, Palumbo, junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and junior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) recorded a Grove City-record time of 1:36.20 in the 200 free relay during a time trial. That time surpasses the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Grove City is in pursuit of its second consecutive conference title. Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. The finals are scheduled for 5:30.
