Grove City wins 2nd straight conference title

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team captured its second consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference title Saturday night as the Wolverines earned first place at the 20th annual Grove City College Invitational/PAC Championships in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.

Grove City concluded the three-day event with 862.5 team points in securing the program's eighth league title.

Grove City sealed the championship by closing the meet with a record-breaking effort in the 400 free relay. The quartet of freshman Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), freshman Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), freshman Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and junior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) recorded a victorious time of 3 minutes, 32.00 seconds. That time set a new school and facility record while also provisionally qualifying the team for the NCAA Championships.

Ryan also won the 100 free in an NCAA "B" time of 52.90 seconds. She led a 1-2-3 sweep in that event for Grove City. Palumbo took second at 53.30 seconds, followed by Page in third (53.83).

Freshman Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) earned Grove City's other individual victory Saturday night as she won the 200 butterfly in an NCAA "B" time of 2:08.66.

Keibler captured second in the 200 backstroke (2:10.65) while sophomore Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) took second in the 1650 (18:02.48). Freshman Mary McLachlan (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) took third in the 1650 (18:38.35) while senior Amanda Thompson (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:10.69.

Also for the Wolverines, sophomore Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) earned third in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.85), two spots ahead of junior Sarah Bargery (Springfield, Va./Homeschooled), who recorded a time of 2:30.71.

Sophomore Bethany Johnson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Calvary Christian) took fourth in 3-meter diving with 336.55 points. Junior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) earned fifth in the 100 free with a time of 54.55.

First-year head coach Dave Fritz earned the conference's Coach of the Year award. Westminster's Caitlin Lehberger earned the conference's Swimming Most Valuable Performer while W&J's Bethany Haver received PAC's Diving Most Valuable Performer.

Baur, Keibler, Palumbo, Page, Richert, Riesmeyer, Ryan and Wilt have all provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.
