Wolverines lead Longnecker Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team is in first place after the opening night of the Grove City College James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. The Wolverines earned 275 team points at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool and own a 73-point lead over second-place Washington & Jefferson.

Grove City opened Thursday night's action by winning the 200 free relay in an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time of 1 minute, 35.79 seconds. Sophomore Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), senior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek), senior Lauren Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and sophomore Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) combined for the victory.

Palumbo also recorded Grove City's lone individual win of the night as she won the 50 in a school-record time of 23.96 seconds. That time surpasses the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Sophomore Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) earned second in the 500 free (5:11.87) while Ryan captured third in the 200 individual medley with a provisional qualifying time of 2:07.68. Ryan, Riesmeyer, Palumbo and junior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) capped the evening by taking second in the 400 medley relay with an NCAA "B" time of 3:54.54.

Junior diver Rachel Weeber (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) earned third on the three-meter board with 306.70 points while Page took fourth in the 50 (24.61). Junior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) took fifth in the 50 (24.61). Senior Stephanie McNeill (Lake Jackson, Texas/Brazoswood) finished fifth in three-meter diving with 278.55 points.

Sophomore Mary McLachlan (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) placed fifth in the 500 with a time of 5:23.10.

Friday's preliminaries will begin at 10 a.m. The finals start at 6 p.m.
