Wolverines extend lead
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team pushed its lead to 182 points in the team standings Friday night at the James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships at Grove City's James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.
The Wolverines have earned 595 points through the first two nights of the three-day event. Washington & Jefferson is second with 413 and Westminster has 379 points.
Grove City swimmers won both relay events Friday night. Sophomore Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), junior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), sophomore Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and sophomore Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) opened Friday night's session by winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 47.14 seconds. That time surpasses the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
Riesmeyer, sophomore Mary McLachlan (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), senior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) and junior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) closed the evening by winning the 800 free relay with a time of 7:46.35.
Riesmeyer and Richert also picked up individual wins for the Wolverines. Riesmeyer won the 100 butterfly in a school-record time of 56.59 seconds, surpassing the NCAA provisional, or "B" standard. Richert provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 200 free with a victorious time of 1:53.50. Palumbo took second to Richert with a 1:54.41 clocking. Palumbo also provisionally qualified in the 200 free.
Ryan placed second in the 400 individual medley with an NCAA "B" time of 4:32.37. Wilt earned third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.52), one spot ahead of freshman Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico), who turned in a fourth-place time of 1:09.14.
McLachlan finished fourth in the 200 free (2:00.12), edging freshman Janele Baglia (Grove City, Pa./Grove City), who finished fifth in 2:00.76.
Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and the finals will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Wolverines are pursuing their third straight league title.
