Grove City wins 3rd consecutive conference title
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team earned its Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Saturday night by finishing the three-day James E. Longnecker Invitational with 888 team points. The Wolverines rolled to the title by posting a 236-point margin over runner-up Washington & Jefferson.
Grove City sealed the meet title by winning the 400 free relay in an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time of 3 minutes, 28.70 seconds. The quartet of sophomore Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), junior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), senior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) and sophomore Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) combined for the victory.
Palumbo also won the 100 free Saturday night, recording a victorious time of 52.28 seconds. In the preliminaries, Palumbo posted a 51.90 clocking, surpassing the NCAA provisional standard.
Sophomore Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) earned Grove City's other individual win by taking the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:04.59. That time automatically qualifies Riesmeyer for the NCAA Championships.
Riesmeyer earned the conference's Swimmer of the Year award for her performance during the meet. She won the 100 butterfly and took second in the 500 free during the meet.
Ryan captured second in the 100 free (52.52), one spot ahead of Richert (52.39). Page completed Grove City's 1-2-3-4 sweep of that event by taking fourth in 53.42 seconds.
Sophomore Mary McLachlan (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) earned third in the 1650 (18:36.02). Junior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) finished third in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.86) and junior Rachel Weeber (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) earned third in 1-meter diving with 298.90 points.
Freshman Kristi Baur (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) took fourth in the 1650 (18:43.68) and sophomore Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) placed fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:12.92).
Head coach Dave Fritz earned the league's Coach of the Year award. Grove City now owns nine conference titles in the last 20 years.
