Grove City takes 5th in 800 free relay
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team produced two All-America efforts Friday at the third day of competition in the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Beloit College and the College of Wooster at the University of Tennessee's Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
Grove City's 800 free relay team of sophomore Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), junior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), sophomore Kaitlin Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and sophomore Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) highlighted Friday's effort by taking fifth place overall. The quartet posted a Grove City-record time of 7 minutes, 29.38 seconds.
Riesmeyer also earned All-America on an individual basis Friday night by finishing 14th in the 200 butterfly (2:04.48). She posted a personal-best time of 2:03.67 in the preliminaries.
Denison won the 800 free relay in a Division III-record time of 7:19.11. Williams junior Logan Todhunter won the 200 fly in 1:57.61.
Palumbo is now an eight-time NCAA All-American. She is tied with Peggy Whitbeck (2001-04) for the most All-America citations in program history. Whitbeck earned All-America in both the 100 and 200 butterfly in each of her four seasons.
Ryan and Riesmeyer both own seven All-America citations. Richert earned her fourth All-America designation. Senior Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek), Grove City's fifth participant at the 2011 NCAA Championships, is a five-time All-American for her career.
Grove City moved into 11th place in the team standings with 61 points, just eight points behind 10th-place Carthage. Grove City placed 11th at the 2010 NCAA Championships.
Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m.
