Grove City humbles previously unbeaten W&J
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team handed previously undefeated Washington & Jefferson its first loss off the 2011-2012 season Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines captured a 151-137 victory in a Presidents' Athletic Conference dual meet at the James E. Longnecker Pool.
Junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) helped lead the Grove City effort by recording three individual victories. She won the 50 free in 24.53 seconds, took the 100 free in 53.05 and then won the 200 free with a time of 1:56.99.
Junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) also touched first in three events for the Wolverines. She won the 1000 in 10:52.72, then posted the top time in both the 500 free (5:17.95) and 200 individual medley (2:12.88).
Senior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) swept the breaststroke. She broke her own school record in winning the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.18 and also won the 100 breast in 1:09.35.
Freshman Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) swept the backstroke. She won the 100 in 1:01.44 and posted a winning time of 2:14.27 in the 200 backstroke. Junior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) prevailed in the 200 butterfly (2:11.02) and recorded the top time in the 100 fly (58.70).
Cassano, Riesmeyer, Palumbo and sophomore Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:50.18. Ryan, senior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), freshman Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and freshman Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) recorded an exhibition time of 3:39.35 in the 400 free relay.
Grove City (7-2, 3-0 PAC) will visit Denison next Saturday in non-conference action.
