Wolverines lead after opening night
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving accumulated 268 points Thursday night in the opening night of the College's James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. Grove City owns a 52-point lead on second-place Washington & Jefferson and a 73-point margin over third-place Westminster.
Grove City bookended Thursday night's finals by winning both relays.
Junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), freshman Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), senior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) opened the meet by winning the 200 free relay in 1 minute, 35.37 seconds. That time sets a new meet record and a new James E. Longnecker Pool mark also.
Cassano, Palumbo, senior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) and junior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) capped the session by winning the 400 medley relay in 3:53.21.
Riesmeyer also won the 500 in 5:09.23 and Palumbo posted a victorious time of 23.78 in the 50 free.
Ryan took second in the 200 individual medley (2:05.98) while Richert captured third in the 50 free (24.83). Freshman Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) earned third in the 500 free (5:13.25).
Wilt placed fourth in the 200 IM (2:14.05), one spot ahead of junior Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who took fifth place in 2:14.14.
Grove City is in pursuit of its fourth straight conference title.
Friday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. and the finals start at 6 p.m.
