Wolverines extend lead at championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving continues to hold first place after two days of competition at the College's three-day James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships. Grove City now has 611 total points and leads second-place Westminster by 182.5 points.

Grove City won both relay events Friday night to help extend the team's lead. The quartet of freshman Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), senior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), junior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 47.30 seconds.

Junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), freshman Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson), senior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and sophomore Janele Baglia (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) closed Friday's session with a winning time of 7:45.88 in the 800 free relay.

Four swimmers also notched individual wins Friday night. Ryan won the 400 individual medley in 4:31.48 while Riesmeyer captured the 100 butterfly in 56.75 seconds. Palumbo won the 200 free (1:52.96) and Cassano prevailed in the 100 backstroke (59.09).

Richert earned second (1:54.52) and Baker placed third (1:55.26) in the 200 free. Cassano placed fourth in the 200 free in 1:56.67, completing Grove City's 1-2-3-4 sweep.

Freshman Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) earned third in the 400 individual medley (4:46.12) while junior Michelle Shimrock (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) and freshman Emma Rudolf (Birchrunville, Pa./Homeschooled) tied for fourth in the 400 IM (4:46.19). Rudolf also took fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.58).

Saturday's preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. The finals begin at 5:30.
