Palumbo earns All-America in 50 free

INDIANAPOLIS -- Grove City College junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) earned All-America honors in the 50 freestyle Wednesday in the first day of action at the four-day 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Palumbo earned 14th place in the 50 free Wednesday night with a time of 23.95 seconds. In Wednesday's preliminaries, she set a new school record in the 50 with a time of 23.66 seconds. Palumbo broke her own record of 23.78, set at this year's Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships.

Palumbo is now a 10-time NCAA Division III All-American. It is her first All-America citation in the 50 free.

Springfield sophomore Kellie Pennington won the national title in the 50 with a time of 23.00 seconds.

Grove City's 200 medley relay quartet of freshman Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), senior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), junior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) placed 19th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:48.01.

Emory won the national title in the 200 medley relay with a victorious time of 1:42.27.

Ryan also competed in the 200 individual medley and finished 29th out of 46 competitors with a time of 2:08.16. Williams senior Logan Todhunter won the 200 IM in 2:00.58. The top 16 finishers or teams in each event earn All-America recognition.

Thursday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m.
