Four earn All-America

INDIANAPOLIS -- Four Grove City College swimmers earned NCAA Division III All-America honors Thursday night at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, held at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) captured All-America distinction in the 200 free and junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) achieved All-America honors in the 400 individual medley. Those two joined senior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and junior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) on Grove City's 200 free relay team that also earned All-America status.

Palumbo finished sixth overall in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 52.35 seconds. She set a new school record in the 200 freestyle preliminaries Thursday morning, recording a time of 1:51.75. Palumbo entered the Championships seeded 13th in the 200 free.

Williams freshman Sarah Thompson won the 200 free national title with a winning time of 1:50.27.

Ryan earned 12th place in the 400 IM with a school-record time of 4:29.36. Ryan held the No. 15 seed in the 400 IM prior to Thursday's preliminaries. Williams junior Caroline Wilson won the 400 IM (4:13.14).

Palumbo, Ryan, Richert and Riesmeyer opened Thursday night's session by earning 10th place in the 200 free relay. That quartet posted a time of 1:35.63 in the finals after recording a 1:35.73 clocking in the preliminaries. Grove City entered the meet seeded 12th in the 200 free relay.

Emory won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:32.38.

Riesmeyer placed 17th in the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly Thursday morning with a time of 56.48 seconds. She had been seeded 19th. Williams senior Logan Todhunter won the 100 fly with a time of 53.04.

Grove City's 400 medley relay quartet of freshman Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), senior Kate Wilt (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), Riesmeyer and Palumbo did not advance to the finals after being disqualified in the preliminaries. A total of five schools did not advance in that event due to disqualification.

Palumbo is now a 12-time NCAA All-American and Ryan owns 10 All-America honors. Riesmeyer is an eight-time All-American and Richert recorded her sixth All-America citation.

Friday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m.
