Grove City finishes in national Top 10
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team concluded the 2011-12 season Saturday night with two more All-America performances at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at IUPUI. Those two performances helped Grove City accumulate 101 team points in the four-day meet, which placed the Wolverines 10th in the final team standings.
It is Grove City's best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships in women's swimming. Grove City had finished 11th each of the last two seasons.
Grove City's 400 free relay team of junior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College), senior Jenna Richert (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), junior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and junior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) concluded the meet by finishing sixth in that event with a time of 3:27.43. By finishing sixth, the team earns NCAA All-America honors.
The quartet entered the Championships as the No. 8 seed nationally in the 400 free relay. Emory won the 400 free relay in 3:22.02.
Palumbo also earned NCAA All-America in the 100 free by taking 15th place Saturday night. Palumbo posted a time of 51.87 seconds in the consolation heat after recording a time of 51.53 in the preliminaries. Ryan finished 26th in the 100 free by recording a 52.24 clocking in the preliminaries.
Palumbo is now a 15-time NCAA Division III All-American. Ryan owns 12 All-America citations and Riesmeyer is a 11-time All-American. Richert concludes her career as an eight-time NCAA All-American.
Emory won the national team title with 639 team points, followed by Williams (453), Denison (420) and Kenyon (360). All-time, 11 Grove City women's swimmers have achieved NCAA All-America distinction, including six in the last three seasons.
