Wolverines roll past W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team opened the new calendar year Saturday by rolling to a 151-117 victory over host Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Henry Memorial Center. Grove City is now 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

Two Grove City swimmers posted multiple individual victories in the triumph. Senior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) won the 100 butterfly and 200 free while senior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won both the 50 and 100 free. Riesmeyer recorded a winning time of 1 minute, 0.01 second in the 100 fly, then went 1:57.62 in winning the 200 free.

Palumbo posted a time of 25.74 in the 50 and 53.27 seconds in the 100 free.

Sophomore Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) won the 1000 in 11:21.25 while sophomore Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) won the 100 back in 1:01.43. Freshman Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) won the 200 butterfly (2:17.45).

Also for Grove City, senior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) took the 200 back in 2:16.21 and junior Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) prevailed in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.97.

Freshman diver Carolyn Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) won 1-meter diving with 179.85 points.

Cassano, Hess, Riesmeyer and Ryan opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:57.92. Ryan, Palumbo, junior Janele Baglia (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and sophomore Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) posted the top time in the 400 free relay (3:41.74). Cassano touched first in the 200 individual medley (2:17.75) on an exhibition basis.

Grove City will host national powerhouse Denison next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the James E. Longnecker Pool.
