Grove City charges past Westminster
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team improved to 8-3 overall Thursday night with a 169-119 victory over archrival Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the James E. Longnecker Pool.
Wolverine competitors posted the top time in 14 of the 16 events held. Senior Angela Palumbo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) helped lead the Wolverines by picking up three individual wins while junior Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico), freshman Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and freshman Carolyn Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) all had two wins.
Palumbo won the 50 free in 24.30 seconds, took the 100 free in 53.23 seconds and prevailed in the 200 free with a 1:55.47 clocking.
Hess swept the breaststroke for the Wolverines, winning the 100 in 1:09.06 and taking the 200 with a time of 2:33.84. Bilko prevailed in the 200 butterfly (2:10.50) and the 500 (5:15.27). Eckendorf won 1-meter diving with 208.05 points and finished first on the 3-meter board with 216.30 points.
Senior Jenny Ryan (State College, Pa./State College) won the 1000 in 10:51.68 and also recorded the top time in the 200 individual medley on an exhibition basis, 2:13.59.
Senior Kait Riesmeyer (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) recorded a time of 59.82 in the 100 fly to touch first. Hess, Riesmeyer, Palumbo and sophomore Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:49.09.
Ryan anchored the 400 free relay, which recorded an exhibition time of 3:40.74. Sophomore Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled), sophomore Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and senior Natalie Keibler (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) joined Ryan on the relay.
Grove City will host Bethany Saturday at 1 p.m. Several Wolverine swimmers will also compete in the Pitt Quad Saturday at 11 a.m.
