Grove City competes at Kenyon
GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition at the three-day Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational Saturday night by taking seventh place in the meet. Grove City finished with 494.5 points. Penn won the meet with 2,412.5 points and Kenyon placed second with 2,012.
Sophomore diver Carolyn Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) helped lead the Grove City effort by setting school records in both diving events. She took second in 3-meter diving with an 11-dive score of 416.18 points and then earned third on the 1-meter board with an 11-dive total of 409.96 points.
Sophomore Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in three events at the meet. She posted a provisional qualifying time of 17 minutes, 25.47 seconds in the 1650, which merited 11th place. Bilko also qualified in the 200 butterfly (2:07.90) and the 400 individual medley (4:32.32). Bilko took 21st in each of those two events.
Grove City posted notable finishes in all five relay events. Bilko, freshman Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), junior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and junior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) closed the meet by taking ninth place in the 400 free relay in 3:33.61.
Baker, Bilko, Cassano and freshman Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe) took 11th in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:43.57. In the 200 free relay, Baker, Cassano, junior Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) and freshman Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) placed 11th with a time of 1:38.25.
Baker, Cassano, Melnik and senior Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico) combined to finish 11th in the 200 medley relay (1:49.68). Cassano, Hess, Baker and freshman Amanda Hutzelmann (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) placed 15th in the 400 medley relay (4:01.56).
Cassano also finished 13th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.77. She added a 19th-place finish in the 200 IM (2:13.78). Hess took 20th in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.96).
Freshman diver Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) recorded fifth-place finishes in both 1- and 3-meter diving. She recorded 358.28 points on the low board and a score of 315.61 in 3-meter action.
Grove City returns to action January 11 against Washington & Jefferson in a home Presidents' Athletic Conference meet.
