Wolverines humble W&J

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team rolled to a 150-133 victory over visiting Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the James E. Longnecker Pool.

Junior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) helped pace the Wolverines by winning both backstroke events. Cassano captured the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 2.63 seconds and then won the 200 backstroke in 2:17.01.

She also contributed to Grove City's victorious effort in the 200 medley relay. Cassano, senior Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico), junior Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) and freshman Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) opened the meet by with a winning time of 1:52.04 in the 200 medley relay.

Jank won the 100 free (56.00) while Hess secured a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.77). Sophomore Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) won the 1000 (11:11.38) while freshman Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe) won the 200 free in 1:59.64. Freshman Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) took first in the 50 (25.67) and freshman Tia Graham (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) won the 200 butterfly in 2:22.23.

Sophomore diver Carolyn Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) swept both the 1- and 3-meter boards. Eckendorf recorded a winning score of 210.95 points on the low board and then had a score of 250.00 in 3-meter action.

Hess posted the top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.12) on an exhibition basis. Smith touched first in both the 200 individual medley (2:17.36) and 500 (5:20.69). Jank, Gallant, junior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and senior Janele Baglia (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) closed the meet with an exhibition time of 1:42.69 in the 200 free relay.

Grove City (5-4, 2-0 PAC) will visit Denison next Saturday at 1 p.m.
