Grove City remains atop standings after second night
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team pushed its lead to 14 points at the James E. Longnecker Invitational/Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships Friday night during the second night of action in the three-day event. Grove City has 546 points while Westminster has 532. Grove City led by 11 points entering Friday's finals.
Grove City won both relay events in Friday night's finals. Junior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), senior Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico), junior Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) and freshman Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) opened the evening by winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 46.87 seconds.
Freshman Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe Academy), freshman Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), junior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and sophomore Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) capped the evening by winning the 800 free relay in a meet-record time of 7:42.23. That time also surpassed the NCAA Championships provisional qualifying standard.
Bilko also won the 400 individual medley in a pool- and meet-record time of 4:28.18. She provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400 IM. Hess, meanwhile, provisionally qualified in the 100 breaststroke with a victorious time of 1:05.98.
Cassano captured the 100 backstroke in a provisional qualifying time of 57.60 seconds while Baker won the 200 free in 1:54.96.
Jank earned runner-up in the 200 free (1:56.65) while junior Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) finished third in the 400 individual medley (4:38.04). Smith took fourth in the 400 IM (4:39.52) while freshman Madison Van Dyke (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island) captured fourth in the 100 back (59.42). Freshman Amanda Hutzelmann (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) placed fifth in the 100 butterfly in 59.81 seconds.
Saturday's preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. The finals start at 5:30 p.m.
