Wolverines sink Allegheny in home opener
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team opened its 2014-15 home schedule Saturday afternoon with a 161.5-125.5 victory over visiting Allegheny in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.
Four Grove City athletes earned multiple individual victories on the day. Junior diver Carolyn Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) swept the diving events, posting a score of 226.30 on the one-meter board before recording a 241.20 on the three-meter board. Sophomore Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe Academy) won the mile in 18:25.26 before earning the victory in the 500 free in 5:21.77.
Seniors Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) and Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) swept the breaststroke and backstroke events, respectively, before tying for the fastest time of the day in the 200 individual medley as exhibition competitors. Reed took the 100 breast in 1:10.91 before winning the 200 in 2:34.02 while Cassano won the 100 back in 1:02.69 before completing the sweep with a 2:15.10 in the 200.
Junior Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) won the 200 free in 1:58.65 while sophomores Amanda Hutzelman (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) and Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) earned wins in the 200 fly (2:20.14) and the 50 free (25.27), respectively.
Cassano, Reed, Hutzelmann and Gallant opened the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay in 1:53.15. Sophomore Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), junior Rachel Shimrock (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South), Bilko and Gallant concluded the day by swimming the meet's fastest time in the 200 free relay (1:43.16).
Grove City returns to action next Saturday when they host Saint Vincent in their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at 1 p.m. During that meet, the Wolverines will honor their All-America and Scholar All-America recipients from last season: Biko, Cassano, Jank, Smith, senior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and 2014 graduate Kaley Hess (Reamstown, Pa./Cocalico).
