Smith, Hutzelmann lead Wolverines past W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe Academy) won three individual events and classmate Amanda Hutzelmann (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) swept the butterfly as the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team earned a 167-131 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent Washington and Jefferson on Saturday afternoon in the Henry Memorial Natatorium.

After the Wolverines' 200 medley relay of senior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), senior Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan), Hutzelmann and sophomore Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) was edged by the Presidents to open the meet, Smith earned Grove City's first win of the day by taking the 1650 by over a minute (18:32.60).

Junior Megan Bilko (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) followed with a victory in the 200 free (1:57.73) before Cassano was victorious in the 100 back in 1:02.66.

Reed won the 100 breast in 1:13.84 as part of a 1-2 finish with freshman Abigail Noll (Rockville, Md./Rockville) before Hutzelmann cruised to a six second win in the 200 fly (2:18.34). Gallant then earned the individual win in the 50 free and junior Carolyn Eckendorf scored a 216.70 on the three-meter board to finish second and give the Wolverines an 80-51 advantage through the first diving break.

Sophomore Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and senior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) finished second and third in the 100 free. For Baker, it was her first competitive swim since the 2014 National Championships as she missed the first half of the season due to injury.

Smith earned her second win of the day by taking the 200 breast in 2:34.24 as she, Reed, and junior Ashley Meesuk (Millersville, Md./Calvary Baptist) swept the top three spots in the event. Sophomore Sarah Blodgett (Bidwell, Ohio/River Valley) won the 500 free in 5:34.15 and Hutzelmann followed by taking the 100 fly in 1:02.39.

Smith (4:52.03) would edge Reed (4:52.07) by just .04 seconds as the duo finished 1-2 in the 400 IM, and Grove City's foursome of Jank, Bilko, Cassano and Gallant closed the day by winning the 200 free relay by more than three-and-a-half seconds with a pool-record time of 1:42.32.

Grove City takes to the road next Saturday when they visit SUNY-Fredonia for a 1 p.m. non-conference meet.
