Wolverines whip Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Led by three individual victories from sophomore Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe Academy), the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team took first in 13 of 16 events en route to a 156-139 victory over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster on Thursday evening in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.

Smith opened her day by winning the 1000 free by more than 22 seconds with a time of 10:43.18. After swimming a lifetime-best of 1:08.56 to win the 100 breast, she made it three-for-three with a 2:27.88 in the 200 breast to win the event by nearly three seconds.

Sophomores Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette), Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington), and Amanda Hutzelmann (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) each added two individual wins for Grove City (7-3, 3-0 PAC).

Klimek opened the meet with a victorious score of 217.60 on the 3-meter board before completing the sweep of the diving events with a 220.25 on the 1-meter board. Jank earned wins in the 100 free (54.13) and 200 free (1:58.04) and took second in the 50 free (25.45) while Hutzelmann swept the butterfly events, winning the 100 in 1:00.58 and the 200 in 2:13.03.

Sophomore Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) earned her third-consecutive win in the 50 free, touching first in 25.15, while senior Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./Thomas Buchanan) claimed victory in the 500 free in 5:24.92.

Senior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added a pair of second-place finishes in the backstroke events while fellow seniors Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) contributed to a 1-2-3 Grove City finish in the 100 free with times of 55.92 and 56.53, respectively.

Cassano, Reed, Hutzelmann and Gallant opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:51.33 while Baker, Smith, Melnik and Jank swam the meet's fastest time in the 400 free relay in an exhibition (3:40.73).

Grove City will close their Presidents' Athletic Conference and regular-season schedule on Saturday, hosting Bethany at 1 p.m. Prior to the meet, the Wolverines will honor their eight seniors: Baker, Liv Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak), Cassano, Liz Funk (Leonardtown, Md./King's Christian), Krystal Gwynn (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield), Melnik, and Reed.
