Grove City downs Bethany on Senior Day

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's swimming and diving team won six events and recorded the meet's top time in seven others as the Wolverines rolled to a Senior Day win over Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany on Saturday afternoon in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool.

Sophomore diver Grace Klimek (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) highlighted the day by setting a new school record with a six-dive score of 259.28 in exhibition on the 1-meter board, surpassing the mark of 252.15 set by current junior Carolyn Eckendorf (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) in 2013.

Sophomore Amanda Hutzelmann (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) was the lone Wolverine to earn two wins on the day. Hutzelmann teamed with sophomores Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), Maddie Van Dyke (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island) and Shelly Newcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) for a victorious time of 4:38.60 in the 400 medley relay before earning an individual win in the 100 breast in 1:14.43 for Grove City (8-3, 4-0 PAC).

Sophomore Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe Academy) completed the 400 IM in 4:46.70 to win the event while senior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) won the 50 free in 25.72. Freshman Abby Noll (Rockville, Md./Rockville) earned the win in the 500 free in 5:41.70 while senior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) secured the Wolverines' final win of the day by taking the 100 free in 55.92.

Junior diver Jess Fortney (Mayville, N.Y./Chautauqua Lake Central) recorded the meet's top score on the 3-meter board (228.15) and added a career-best score of 235.28 on the 1-meter board. Junior Rachel Shimrock (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) recorded the meet's fastest time in the 200 breast in exhibition (2:44.42), while Cassano did the same in the 100 fly (1:01.52), senior Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) in the 1650 and Smith in the 200 IM.

Gallant, Newcamp, Smith and sophomore Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) closed the meet with the top time in the 400 free relay in exhibition (3:50.70).

During the diving break, Grove City honored eight seniors who were swimming in their final regular season home meet: Baker, Liv Beckner (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), Lauren Burrows (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak), Cassano, Elizabeth Funk (Leonardtown, Md./King's Christian), Krystal Gwynn (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield), Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) and Reed.

Today's meet concludes the regular season for the Wolverines. Grove City returns to action when it hosts the 2015 Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships/James E. Longnecker Swimming and Diving Invitational from February 11-14. Preliminary diving will take place on Wednesday evening with morning sessions beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
