Wolverine women trail by four points
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- After two nights of competition, the Grove City College women's swimming and diving team trails rival Westminster by just four points in the three-day Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships/James E. Longnecker Invitational.
Westminster has tallied 523 points through the Friday night finals while Grove City owns 519 points.
Sophomore Megan Smith (Tyler, Texas/Kolbe Academy) earned her second individual title of the meet by claiming the 400 individual medley in an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 4:32.43 while senior Keegan Reed (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) also recorded a B-cut time of 4:34.56 in taking third place.
Junior Rachel Shimrock (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) finished fifth in the event with a time of 4:49.29 while freshman Abby Noll (Rockville, Md./Rockville) placed sixth in 4:50.90.
In the 200 free final, sophomore Abby Jank (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) earned the title with a time of 1:54.65, edging out teammate and senior Tori Baker (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) by just .01 seconds (1:54.66). Shimrock also finished sixth in 1:59.22 to complete a difficult back-to-back.
Senior Lauren Cassano (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) claimed Grove City's third individual title of the night and her second of the meet by winning the 100 backstroke in 58.44. With the victory, Cassano completed the career sweep of the 100 back, winning her fourth-consecutive conference title in the event.
Sophomore Maddie Van Dyke (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island) took third in the 100 back with a time of 59.05 while sophomore Amanda Hutzelmann (Milford, Pa./Homeschooled) and Amy Melnik (Clifton Park, N.Y./Homeschooled) took fifth (59.14) and sixth (59.93) in the 100 fly. Noll added a sixth place finish in the 100 breast (1:09.70).
The Wolverine foursome of Cassano, Baker, Smith and Jank closed the night by cruising to victory in the 800 free relay, winning by 11 seconds with a time of 7:43.22.
Cassano, Reed, Hutzelmann and sophomore Molly Gallant (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay in 1:48.88.
Saturday's preliminaries start at 10 a.m. The finals begin at 5:30 p.m.
