Freshman Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, PA/Meadville) broke two varsity records and secured a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships in her first college meet as the Lady Wolverines opened their 2000-01 season at Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday.  Whitbeck beat the Division III automatic qualifying standard and set a new varsity and CMU pool record in the 200-yard butterfly with a first-place time of 2:06.80.  The non-tapered time shattered the Division III qualifying "A" standard of 2:08.49 by nearly two seconds, earning her a spot at the 2001 national championships, March 8-10, at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, NY.

Whitbeck also broke the varsity record in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 2:15.42, and swam on the first-place 400 medley relay team, which finished in 4:16.10.  The relay team also included junior Sarah Erdos (Broomall, PA/Marple Newtown), sophomore Amanda Schade (Imperial, PA/West Allegheny) and freshman Julie Pullin (Munroe Falls, OH/Hawken).

Erdos added a first-place swim in the 50 freestyle with a time of :25.85, while the rookie Pullin wasted little time recording her first individual victory, touching first in the 200 backstroke in 2:18.40.

Carnegie Mellon won the meet, 147-89.
