Whitbeck qualifies for nationals in two events

MEADVILLE, PA, November 11, 2000--Lady Wolverine freshman Peggy Whitbeck (Saegertown, PA/Meadville) posted four first-place finishes, including a pair of NCAA qualifying swims, at the four-school Allegheny Sprint Invitational.

Whitbeck beat the NCAA's automatic qualifying standard in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of :58.08 and the 200-yard butterfly at 2:06.33, bettering her 2:06.80 set two weeks ago at Carnegie Mellon. The NCAA Division III "A" standards in the butterfly are :58.29 in the 100 and 2:08.49 in the 200. The national championships will be held Mar. 8-10 at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, NY.

Wooster won Friday's sprint meet with 430 points, followed by SUNY Cortland (281), Grove City (273) and Allegheny (261). Wooster captured Saturday's distance title as well with 884 points. SUNY-Cortland took second (336), Allegheny third (313) and Grove City fourth (292).
