Whitbeck outshines field at 2002 GCC Invitational
GROVE CITY, PA, February 23, 2002--For the second year in a row, Grove City College sophomore Peggy Whitbeck couldn't be beat.
Whitbeck posted three championship swims in three NCAA-qualifying times as the Lady Wolverines placed fourth out of 10 schools at the 2002 Grove City College Invitational Swimming & Diving Championships, Feb. 21-23.
Winner of the meet's high-point award for the second straight year, Whitbeck beat the NCAA Division III automatic qualifier in the 100-yard butterfly (58.02) and 200 fly (2:06.03) after opening with an NCAA "B" cut in the 500 freestyle (5:08.89). All three times set new Invitational and Presidents' Athletic Conference records. The 500 time also broke her own varsity record.
Whitbeck, an All-American in two events at nationals last year, will compete in three individual events at the 2002 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, Mar. 14-16, at the Miami University Sports and Recreation Aquatic Center in Oxford, OH.
Sophomore Julie Pullin turned in a gold-medal performance in the 200 backstroke (2:15.22), while senior Sarah Erdos won silver medals in the 50 freestyle (25.43) and 100 free (55.36).
Grove City broke three varsity relay records with third-place overall times in the 400 free relay (3:42.41), 800 free relay (8:07.06) and 400 medley relay (4:08.65). Each was good for first place in the PAC championship standings.
The Lady Wolverines won 13 events among PAC schools and placed second overall in the final league standings to Washington & Jefferson, who won with 789 points. Grove City finished with 665 points, followed by Bethany with 226.
Grove City's top times are listed below with each performer listed alphabetically. A top-three finish in the "PAC Place" column represents PAC first-, second- and third-team honors, respectively.
