Grove City earns NCAA berth

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's tennis team will make its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament this weekend after receiving an at-large berth. Grove City (14-5) will face Agnes Scott (13-1) Friday at 10 a.m. in the opening round of the 47-team tournament at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.

Grove City received one of six Pool B invitations, which are given to independent teams or teams from conferences whose champion does not receive an automatic invitation to the NCAA Championships. Grove City is the first women's tennis team from the Presidents' Athletic Conference to advance to the NCAA Championships.

The Wolverines posted a 12-2 mark during the fall 2008 season while winning their 22nd consecutive PAC title. Grove City also competed in five matches this spring, going 2-3.

Grove City is currently ranked 24th in the Atlantic South region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Agnes Scott, a women's institution located in the Atlanta suburb of Decatur, Ga., won the Great South Athletic Conference title by earning a 5-2 dual-match win over Huntingdon College April 26. The Scotties enter the NCAA Tournament on a 10-match win streak. Six of those wins have been by shutout scores of 9-0 or 5-0.

Agnes Scott is 25th in the ITA Atlantic South rankings.

The winner of the Grove City-Agnes Scott match will face Emory Saturday at 10 a.m. The third round will be played Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The other side of the regional bracket features a first-round match between Meredith (17-3) and Gwynedd-Mercy (15-2). That match will be played Friday at 2 p.m. Washington & Lee will play the winner of that bout Saturday at 2 p.m. in the regional semifinals.
