Grove City fares well at ITAs

FREDERICKSBURG, VA, October 1, 2000--The Grove City College women's tennis team advanced three singles players and its top doubles team to Sunday's  'sweet sixteen' round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic South Region Championships, hosted by Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA.

Junior Alyssa Bradford (Akron, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), sophomore Lisa Oriti (Brecksville, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and senior Wendy Carlson (Hanover, PA/Southwestern), who comprise the Lady Wolverines' 1-3 singles positions, each opened the 64-player tournament with a pair of victories before falling in the round of 16.

Bradford cruised to straight-set wins over opponents from Franklin & Marshall (6-3, 6-0) and Christopher Newport (6-0, 6-0) before losing to Swarthmore in three sets (2-6, 6-2, 2-6).  Oriti blanked her first-round foe from Collins (6-0, 6-0) and added a hard-fought win over Salisbury State (7-6 (7-4), 6-4) but dropped her third match to top-ranked Washington & Lee (1-6, 1-6).  Carlson eased past Swarthmore (6-2, 6-3) and Haverford (6-0, 6-0) but couldn't get past her third-round adversary from Washington (2-6, 1-6).

Bradford and Carlson were one of 32 doubles teams in the field and rallied to victory in their first match against Franklin & Marshall (1-6, 6-4, 7-5).  Washington & Lee's favored twosome eliminated GCC in the second round (6-2, 6-1).
