Grove City captures 18th straight PAC title

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's tennis team secured its 18th straight Presidents' Athletic Conference title Saturday by crowning six champions at the 2004 PAC Championships at the Pennbriar Club. The Wolverines earned 47 of a possible 54 team points, out-distancing runner-up Waynesburg (30).

Senior Megan Hulick (Butler, Pa./Butler) earned the conference's Player of the Year award after winning conference titles at both first singles and first doubles. Hulick won her singles title with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Bethany's Katie Navarra Saturday after earning a 6-2, 6-0 semifinal win over Westminster's Amy Caliguiri on Friday.

At first doubles, Hulick teamed with junior Julie Crewson (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) for an 8-3 victory in Saturday's final over Navarra and Hillary Norman, the top-seeded tandem in the tournament. Friday, Crewson and Hulick defeated Washington and Jefferson's Terra Naviglia-Jennifer Scott in the semifinals, 8-4.

Sophomore Lindsay Hosler (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central) and freshman Kristin McNally (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) teamed to win the second doubles crown. Both also won PAC singles titles. At fourth singles, Hosler advanced to Saturday's finals with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Washington and Jefferson's Katy Petousis in the semifinals. In the finals, Hosler downed Waynesburg's Jenn Knight 6-4, 6-1.

McNally won the second singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Waynesburg's Katie Kravits. In Friday's semifinals, McNally topped Naviglia, 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Nicole Leasure (Washington, Pa./Trinity) became Grove City's fourth individual champion by earning a pair of straight-set wins at fifth singles. Leasure downed Waynesburg's Rebecca Greene in Friday's semis, 6-4, 6-3, then earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over top-seeded Amy Browell of Westminster in the finals.

Sophomore Kelsey Nee (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) took second at sixth singles after falling to Westminster's Christina Commisso in the finals, 6-2, 6-3. Nee won her Friday semifinal, 6-1, 6-2 over Washington and Jefferson's Kristina Tarasan.

Leasure and junior Jenna Powell (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) fell to Browell and Bethany Grubbs in the third doubles final, 8-5. Leasure and Powell advanced to the finals with a 8-3 win over Petousis and Tarasan.

Crewson took third at third singles. She dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 verdict to Bethany's Lindsay Caparese in the semis but rebounded for a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the third-place match against Washington and Jefferson's Lauren Latuska Saturday.
