Wolverines win 19th straight PAC tennis title
ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's tennis team captured its 19th consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Saturday by sweeping all nine championship matches at the Pennbriar Racquet and Fitness Club. Grove City earned 54 team points to secure the title.
Sophomore Kristin McNally (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) earned the PAC's Player of the Year award after capturing the first singles title. Head coach Cathy Jacobs earned the league's Coach of the Year award.
McNally won the first singles title with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Waynesburg's Mindy Hall. She also teamed with junior Lindsey Hosler (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central) for the PAC second doubles title. McNally and Hosler defeated Waynesburg's Beth Conlon and Jenn Knight, 8-4.
At second singles, freshman Tamara Nations (Kailua, Hawaii/Homeschooled) capped her rookie season by downing Bethany's Lindsay Caparese in the finals, 6-0, 6-3. Senior Julie Crewson (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) closed her career by winning the third singles title over Knight, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Nations and Crewson won the first doubles title over Hall and Laura Garcia, 8-2.
Hosler won the fourth singles title with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Garcia while sophomore Erin Bennett (Poland, Ohio/Poland) won at fifth singles over Waynesburg's Sara DePiano, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Chris Sager (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) won the sixth singles title with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Washington and Jefferson's Lisa McLaughlin.
Bennett teamed with senior Jenna Powell (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit) for the third doubles title as they downed DePiano and Evelyn Fabian, 8-1.
