Andreini wins consolation bracket at ITA Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Grove City College freshman Nicole Andreini (Wheeling, W. Va./Wheeling Central Catholic) captured the consolation bracket of the Championship singles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships Monday at the University of Mary Washington.

Along with Andreini, senior Lindsey Hosler (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central), sophomore Tamara Nations (Kailua, Hawaii/Homeschooled) and freshman Kristin Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) also participated in the ITA Championships.

Andreini defeated Mary Washington's Katie Miglin in the consolation final, 9-8. Miglin entered the tournament as the No. 7 overall seed. Andreini had advanced to the finals with a walkover win over 10th-seeded Katie Gaskins of Franklin & Marshall.

Andreini fell into the consolation bracket Saturday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Mary Washington's Kate Malpeli. Andreini then began her march through the consolations with an 8-1 victory over Moravian's Brittany Popaca. She advanced to the consolation quarterfinals by blanking Haverford's Priya Amar, 8-0.

In the quarterfinals, Andreini secured an 8-4 win over Swarthmore's Wavery Lutz.

Nations also competed in the Championship singles draw and went 1-2. She opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Johns Hopkins' Brittnay Matava, the bracket's fifth seed. In her first consolation match, Nations downed Catholic's Leia DiCocco, 8-1. However, Carnegie Mellon's Andrea Meythaler eliminated Nations in the second round, 8-1.

Hosler and Taylor both competed in the Blue singles draw. Hosler went 1-1 in the winner's bracket. She opened with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Christopher Newport's Kelly Clay. However, Hosler bowed to Mary Washington's Danika Robison, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round.

Taylor fell to Franklin & Marshall's Lauren Hakkinen in the first round, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. In the consolation bracket, Taylor eliminated Haverford's Tiffany Robinette, 8-0. Taylor fell in the second round of consolations, though, dropping an 8-3 verdict to Catholic University's Corinne Alcorn.

Andreini and Nations went 1-1 in Championship doubles action. They teamed for an 8-5 over Franklin & Marshall's Danielle Barish and Dana Russo in the opening round. However Andreini-Nations fell to CMU's Katie Tabb and Ginny Wortham, 8-3.
