Grove City wins 22nd straight conference title

ERIE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's tennis team won eight of nine total flights Saturday in clinching the program's 22nd straight Presidents' Athletic Conference title at the Pennbriar Club. Grove City earned 52 points over the two-day championships. Westminster placed second with 38 team points.

Senior Tamara Nations (Kailua, Hawaii/Homeschooled) earned PAC Player of the Year honors after capturing the title at first singles. Nations downed Westminster's April Scudere in the finals, 6-2, 6-1. Nations reached the finals with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 win over Chatham's Barb Petty in the semifinals.

At second singles, freshman Stacy Moon (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) downed Westminster's Andrea Redhair in the title match, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 to cap her rookie season. Moon picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson's Elizabeth Kress in the semifinals.

Junior Lisa Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) won the PAC third singles title with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Westminster's Hilary Newman. Baldwin reached the finals with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Waynesburg's Jessica Mally in the semifinal round.

Junior Kait Garcia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) captured the fourth singles crown with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Westminster's Dana Griesmer in the championship round. Garcia downed Chatham's Megan Padula in the semifinals, 6-0 and 6-0.

At No. 5 singles, freshman Christina Bedi (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar F. Smith) won her first conference title with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Westminster's Natalie Hruska. Bedi blanked Waynesburg's Cassandra Califf in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0.

Freshman Reena Barnett (El Paso, Texas/Homeschooled) completed Grove City's singles sweep by taking first at sixth singles. After a 6-0, 6-0 win over W&J's Carrie Campbell in the semifinals, Barnett downed Westminster's Rachel Jack in the title match, 6-4, 7-5.

Grove City also won two of the three doubles flights. Baldwin and junior Kristin Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) won the No. 2 doubles title with an 8-2 win over Newman and Griesmer. The Baldwin-Taylor tandem reached the finals with an 8-0 win over Thomas More's Lindsey Burns and Brittaney Knapp.

At third doubles, Moon and Barnett downed Jack and Beth Erwin in the finals, 8-3. Moon and Barnett entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and opened the draw with an 8-0 win over Waynesburg's Kelsey Diesel and Jenny McAndrews. In the semifinals, Moon-Barnett eliminated W&J's Campbell and Kim Knapek, 8-0.

Nations and Garcia dropped an 8-5 decision to Scudere and Redhair in the first singles final. Nations and Garcia entered the tournament as the top seed while Scudere-Redhair entered as the second seed.

Westminster head coach Scott Renninger earned PAC Coach of the Year. Under the guidance of interim head coach Joe Walters, Grove City finished with a 12-2 overall record in 2008, including a 6-0 mark against PAC foes.
