Grove City fares well at ITA Tournament

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Several Grove City College women's tennis players participated in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Mary Washington Saturday and Sunday.

Freshman Christina Bedi (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar F. Smith) went 8-0 at the tournament and earned two titles. Bedi went 5-0 in winning the Gray singles draw. She also teamed with freshman Stacy Moon (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) to go 3-0 en route to the Gray doubles title.

Bedi won the Gray singles title by claiming an 8-6 victory over Haverford's Sarita Kapadia in the finals. Bedi advanced to the finals with a 9-7 win over freshman teammate Reena Barnett (El Paso, Texas/Homeschooled) in the semifinal round. Barnett went 3-0 in the Gray draw before falling to Bedi.

After a first-round bye, Bedi defeated DeSales' Krista Damirgian in the second round, 6-2, 6-1. Bedi then blanked Allison Smith, 8-0, in the third round. Bedi reached the semifinals with an 8-3 win over Haverford's Meaghan Ryan.

Barnett's path to the semifinals began with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over DeSales' Amelia Lloyd. Barnett then picked up an 8-2 victory over Bryn Mawr's Priscilla Roney before slipping past Franklin & Marshall's Shannon Littlefield, 9-7.

Bedi and Moon defeated Smith and Zannah Webster in the opening round of the Gray doubles draw, 8-2. The Bedi-Moon combo then downed Littlefield and Ally Warshaver in the semifinals. Bedi and Moon then earned the title after both of the other semifinal teams defaulted out of the tournament.

Moon went 0-1 in the Blue singles draw while juniors Lisa Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) and Kait Garcia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) both went 1-1 in the Blue draw. Baldwin opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Shenandoah's Brittany Bascope. Baldwin then dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Washington & Lee's Laura Pattillo.

Garcia topped Salisbury's Alix Royston in the opening round, 6-3, 6-1. In the second round, W&L's Crystal Spencer earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Garcia.

Baldwin and junior Kristin Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Worthington Christian) won their opener in the Blue doubles draw over Haverford's Sarah Budrus and Kate Dotson, 8-4, before withdrawing from the tournament.

Garcia and senior Tamara Nations (Kailua, Hawaii/Homeschooled) competed in the Championship doubles draw but fell 8-2 to Hood College's Katherine Drooyan and Helen Fisun. Nations played in the Championship singles draw and dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Carnegie Mellon's Jennifer Chui.

Grove City (7-0 overall) returns to action Wednesday against visiting Penn State Behrend at 3:30 p.m.
