Wolverines whip Webster in NCAA opener

CHICAGO -- The Grove City College women's tennis team earned its first-ever NCAA Championship Tournament victory Thursday afternoon by picking up a 5-1 decision over Webster (Mo.) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament at the University of Chicago.

Grove City won two of the three doubles bouts, then picked up wins in three straight singles matches to secure the overall win. NCAA Tournament matches are stopped once one team has accumulated five wins.

Sophomore Stacy Moon (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Webster's Lindsey Hayes at third singles to sew up the victory. Junior Kimberly Peterson (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) and senior Lisa Baldwin (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) also recorded singles wins for the Wolverines.

Sophomore Reena Barnett (El Paso, Texas/Homeschooled) and junior Natalie Walten (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) opened the match with an 8-1 win at third doubles. Moon and sophomore Megan Bennett (Poland, Ohio/Poland) rolled to an 8-0 victory at first doubles.

Grove City (15-5) will face host Chicago Friday at 3 p.m. Eastern in the regional semifinals. Chicago is the No. 3 overall seed in the 48-team tournament.
