Carnegie Mellon 5, Grove City 4
September 3, 1998--Grove City freshman Alyssa Bradford (Akron,
OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) won her first collegiate match at first singles, defeating
Carnegie Mellon's nationally-ranked Keri Mills, 7-5, 6-0, but the Lady Wolverines came
away on the short end of a 5-4 decision in their season opener in Pittsburgh.
Other Lady Wolverines winners included junior Victoria Hull (Somis, CA/La Reina) at third
singles (6-3, 6-0), sophomore Lisa Evans (Butler, PA/Butler) at sixth singles (2-6, 6-0,
7-6 (7-5)), and the second-doubles team of sophomore Wendy Carlson (Hanover,
PASouthwestern) and junior Kristen Bedillion (Hickory, PA/Fort Cherry) (8-2).
Carlson fell at second singles (1-6, 6-2, 4-6), Bedillion lost at fourth singles (0-6,
3-6), and Bailey dropped fifth singles (6-4, 5-7, 3-6). In doubles, Bradford and
Hull were edged by CMU's nationally-ranked first-doubles team (6-8), while Bailey and
junior Kara Jo Hoisington (Dimondale, MI/Waverly) lost at third doubles (2-8).
Grove City hosts IUP and Mercyhurst Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
